At Hippie Hens Homestead, we’re passionate about raising our curly-feathered Sebastopol goslings with love and care. Known for their fluffy, cloud-like plumage and gentle demeanor, these ornamental geese, descended from the European Greylag, thrive with a tailored approach to their diet, vitamins, and environment. Here’s a concise guide to help you nurture healthy, happy Sebastopol goslings on your homestead, perfect for our website visitors and fellow goose enthusiasts.

Brooder Setup and Environment

Sebastopol goslings need a cozy, secure brooder for their first 4-6 weeks:

• Temperature: Start at 90-95°F (week 1), reducing by 5-7°F weekly until 75°F by week 4. Use a heat plate for safety over heat lamps to prevent fires.

• Bedding: Layer 4 inches of absorbent bedding (pine shavings or peat moss) over towels to avoid slipping, which can cause splay leg. Steer clear of slick surfaces like newspaper.

• Space: Allow 1.5 square feet per gosling to support their rapid growth.

• Vent Care: Check vents daily for “pasty butt” (clogged feces), gently cleaning with a damp cotton swab to prevent blockages that can be fatal.

• Socialization: Handle goslings gently to build trust, as Sebastopols are shy but social. Add a mirror or safe toys to keep them engaged. Never raise a single gosling—pairs or trios (ideally 1 male, 2 females) ensure companionship.

Diet for Healthy Growth

Sebastopol goslings grow fast, requiring a nutrient-rich diet to fuel their development:

• Starter Feed: From day 1, provide unmedicated waterfowl starter feed (19-21% protein), like Kalmbach’s Duck, Goose, and Swan Feed, formulated for goslings’ high niacin needs. Avoid chick starter, which lacks sufficient niacin.

• Poultry Booster: Sprinkle a poultry booster (e.g., Rooster Booster Poultry Cell) on feed daily (per package instructions, ~1/8 tsp per gosling) to enhance vitamins, minerals, and probiotics, supporting immunity and growth.

• Greens and Grazing: After 3-5 days, introduce finely chopped, pesticide-free greens like romaine lettuce (rich in Vitamin A) or dandelion. By 2 weeks, offer frozen green peas (thawed, chopped) as a high-niacin treat—limit to 1-2 tsp per gosling daily to avoid digestive upset. At 2 months, transition to mostly grass (short clippings, not stringy) with supplemental feed on poor pastures. Provide chick-sized grit to aid digestion.

• Water Access: Ensure constant access to clean water deep enough for bill-dunking (to clear nostrils) but not swimming until 2 weeks (1-2 inches, supervised). Clean waterers daily, as goslings are messy.

Vitamin and Mineral Needs

Sebastopol goslings have specific nutritional requirements to prevent deficiencies and support their unique feathering:

• Niacin (Vitamin B3): Essential for leg and joint health, goslings need 55-65 mg/kg of feed. Waterfowl starter feeds typically include niacin, but boost with:

• Vitamin B Complex Drops: Add 4-5 drops of liquid Vitamin B complex (e.g., Durvet Vitamin B Complex) per gallon of water daily for the first 4 weeks, especially during stress (e.g., transport, heat changes). This prevents bowed legs or lameness from niacin deficiency.

• Brewer’s yeast (1 tsp per cup of feed) as an alternative if drops are unavailable.

• Vitamin A: Supports growth and immunity, found in romaine lettuce and quality feeds. Avoid over-supplementation to prevent toxicity.

• Vitamin E and Riboflavin: Prevent staggering or curled-toe paralysis. Included in feeds and poultry boosters; monitor for incoordination.

• Calcium, Phosphorus, Vitamin D: Crucial for bone health to avoid rickets. Ensure balanced feed, grit, and poultry booster access.

Special Sebastopol Considerations

• Curly Feathers: Their loose, curly feathers provide less insulation, so shield goslings from cold or wet conditions. Offer draft-free shelter and clean bathing water by 2 weeks to keep feathers unmatted.

• Splay Leg and Twisted Wings: Monitor for splay leg (from slick surfaces) and correct with vet wrap hobbles. Twisted wing tips, common due to heavy feathers, may need taping at 2 months.

• Swimming: Delay unsupervised swimming until 4 weeks, when waterproof feathers develop, to prevent chilling or drowning.

• Companionship: Sebastopols flourish in flocks. Raise at least two goslings to avoid loneliness, with a trio being ideal for social harmony.

Hippie Hens Homestead Tips

• Outdoor Grazing: After 1-2 weeks, allow supervised grazing on grass for 10-20 minutes daily (in warm weather, like Central California’s climate) to encourage foraging. Romaine and frozen green peas make excellent training treats.

• Health Checks: Watch for wry neck (vitamin deficiency or trauma) or leg issues, consulting a vet promptly. Our poultry booster and B complex drops help prevent these.

• Pet Safety: At Hippie Hens Homestead, we keep our dogs separated from goslings to avoid stress, using secure fencing for peace of mind.

At Hippie Hens Homestead, we know raising Sebastopol goslings is a joyful, rewarding experience. Their fluffy feathers and sweet personalities bring magic to our farm, and with these care tips, your goslings will grow into stunning, healthy geese—perfect as weed-eaters or charming pets. We’re thrilled to share our passion with you!
